Background of Business
After losing his job as a service engineer through redundancy, Adrian McSharry, of Keighley, enrolled at Keighley College. He took courses in plumbing, plastering and tiling, gaining City & Guilds qualifications last year. However, with the recession deepening and fewer jobs becoming available he decided to consider self employment.

His wife Jane had heard about the Kickstart programme so Adrian called Airedale Enterprise Services, where Rav Panesar became his Business Counsellor. He advised him on all aspects of starting a small business, including registering as self-employed, opening a business bank account (at NatWest), taking out business insurance and understanding his tax obligations. Adrian also attended a Kickstart course in book-keeping. Rav is continuing to provide guidance and support to Adrian as he builds his new business at a challenging time.
Where are they now
With businesses and families currently spending less, demand for plumbing, plastering and tiling has declined so Adrian is finding it challenging to obtain work at the present time. However, he is hoping that one of the skills he has mastered, Venetian plastering, will generate business, despite the recession. Sometimes called ‘polished plastering,' this technique produces an attractive marbled appearance, ideal for showers or wet rooms. With his skills and qualifications, coupled with increasing experience, Adrian remains confident that once the economy begins to improve he will be able to build a strong business in Keighley and the Aire Valley.
