Background of Business

Gary Blonder is a fully qualified hypnotherapist, Reiki practitioner and stress counsellor. He is based at the GRID South business centre in West Bowling, one of two funded by Bradford Kickstart to encourage start-up businesses. Previously, Gary pursued careers as a production manager and in teaching. He specialises in helping people to lose weight, give up smoking or cope with pain or stress. People with phobias, or who experience trauma or insomnia, also seek his advice.

Support Journey

Gary was recommended to visit the GRID business centre when he was planning to become self-employed and, initially, was based at GRID West, in Manningham. ‘Launching my business was one of the best decisions I ever made, as now I'm finally doing what I love,' he says. At the centre he was able to access sound advice from Kickstart business counsellors on preparing a business plan and cash flow forecasting. He was also introduced to the wide range of free business skills workshops offered by Kickstart in many parts of the District.

Where are they now

Recognising the caution many people feel about complementary therapy, Gary offers an informal drop-in session once a week, at a nominal fee, as well as a free meditation class for GRID-based business founders. His qualifications are endorsed by the National Council for Hypnotherapy and he is a member of the Reiki Association. His business now features on the Best of Bradford website. He adds: ‘I believe totally in what I do because of what hypnotherapy has done for me. I weighed 16 stone and was angry and bitter until I had hypnotherapy; now I'm 12 stone and have a positive outlook.' Asked what advice he would give to anyone considering starting a small business, he replies: ‘Two simple words - get networking. It is by far the most cost-effective way of getting yourself out there. It's important to build strong relationships with lots of other business people and, as trust builds, I feel confident to refer my clients to others. Everybody wins that way.'
